Omega-verse usually gets a bad rep because of its fundamental idea that the people a part of this universe must oblige to the nature of their secondary sex: alpha, beta, and omega. Alphas must be strong, intelligent, and dominant and omegas must be weak and submissive. Betas are just extras usually background to the chaotic lives of alphas and omegas who are vulnerable to each other's pheromones.
What *I* personally enjoy about reading is leaving my own reality and being able to jump into another's without really having to face the consequences of said alternate universe. In the omega-verse specifically, we are able to escape the gender roles and gender discrimination we may meet in our own world and see how the same issues are confronted in a different setting.
To put it blatantly, alphas seem to represent " cis- men" while omegas are supposed to represent "cis-women" with their ability to become pregnant regardless of their first sex identity. While this factor may make gender roles seem to be on a more "even playing ground", it still indirectly emphasizes the stereotypical and two dimensional gender roles we have faced and continue to face in our society. Still, this does not mean all omega-verse stories are bad. This means that authors who choose to base their universe with the omega-verse should understand the implications caused by these gender roles and provide stories and characters that go beyond two dimensional. Definitely not the first omega verse stories I have read, but it is definitely one of my favorites, Kiraide Isasete, does go beyond to create heart warming story and well developed characters that you only want the best for. If you are new or maybe skeptical to the omegaverse, I highly suggest you give this a read. It is 18+ story with some triggering scenes so please be warned.
Have fun reading!
